IN SEPTEMBER 1993, a group of parents set up the Ginikanan Foundation,
whose aim was to set up a school, which emphasized the importance
of parents and family in the education of their children. They asked
assistance from the Parents for Education Foundation (PAREF) in
conducting marketing get-togethers for other parents who believed
in the PAREF philosophy.
It was fortunate to count among its members some who were familiar
with the PAREF educational system.
They chose a large ancestral house with sprawling
grounds in the Lahug area to be the site of the school. PAREF Southcrest
first opened its doors to students in June 1994, with three teachers
and three levels: Pre-nursery, Nursery, and Junior Kinder. The total
school population was 34.
Enrollment increased as more students, and consequently
faculty members, are added to the roster. Parents, based on feedback,
are confident of sending their children to Southcrest School for
that distinctive PAREF education with emphasis on proper values
formation. The tutorial system of Southcrest helps a lot towards
effective home-school collaboration. The children, as part of their
values education, also participate in community outreach activities
to become socially aware and involved in service for others.
With each passing year, a grade level was added.
A new building was constructed in 1998 to house the primary level.
Another was built in 2000 to house the intermediate level.
Now on its sixth year of operation, Southcrest
School's population has reached 301, from Pre-Nursery to Grade 5.
