In 1996 a group of parents came up with the vision of a distinct Chinese preparatory school that takes a more personal approach in the education of children.

A year later, this vision was realized. With a roster of 18 pupils, Yu Ming embarked on its mission of bringing the PAREF philosophy to the Filipino Chinese community. Yu Ming began its task of transmitting Chinese culture and heritage while providing the necessary academic tools and infusing Christian values, resulting in the holistic formation of the child.

Yu Ming, which means bright and cheerful home, is reflective of the PAREF belief that parents are the child's primary educators and that the school supports them in this role. Through formation programs for parents and the tutorial system whereby each student is assigned a tutor who monitors the scholastic and personal growth of the child, a constant home-school collaboration on how to best address the child's many needs is established.

But more than being a bright and cheerful home, Yu Ming holds a much deeper meaning: light of the universe. Besides providing academic training, the school sees to it that the child's social consciousness is awakened and his character upright. At his early age, he is already immersed in outreach activities that open his eyes to his responsibilities as a member of the community. Proper attitudes and values toward work and others are incorporated into the children's day-to-day activities.

The Yu Ming School, now on its fourth year of pre-school education, looks forward to expanding into primary and secondary levels of education while keeping in mind the same vision that moved its pioneers. The school wishes to fulfill its role of producing individuals, who, having been nurtured in a bright and cheerful home, will someday leave a radiant mark in the community, who will someday be the light of the universe.
